Having to meet my girlfriends parents, fearing that I may stammer

At the age of eighteen I met a girl called Lucy. Up to this point in my life, I had found it quite hard to meet girls, this was mainly down to my stammer/stutter and the fact that I had a lack of confidence(possible because of the stammer).

 

Lucy seemed quite keen on me and we started to go out together to places like the cinema etc. At first I was quite shy and at times would stammer when attempting to answer one of her questions.

 

One day however I decided to talk to her about my speech impediment, about the way it made me feel, about how desperate and determined I was to beat the stammer and about how frustrating I found it.

 

Lucy stated that the fact that I had a stammer did not bother her and that she would help me as much as she could - result!

 

I felt like I was in heaven - not that I have been there of course. After a few weeks of dating Lucy, the time came when I had to meet her parents.

 

In my mind I was thinking some quite negative thoughts, this was my demons or inner voice talking to me in attempt to make me even more nervous. Lucy does not care that you stammer, but her parents might? Do you really think that her parents would want her to date somebody who has a stammer?

 

This voice was something I had always struggled to control and by the time that her parents arrived home I was a bag of nerves.

 

That first meeting actually went quite well, yes I did stammer but not half as bad as I thought I would have. Lucy's parents were fine about the stammer and Lucy later told me that she had actually talked to her parents about my speech impediment and that they were fine with it.

 

Even though Lucy and her parents did not seem to care that I had a stammering problem, I did. It may not bother them but it certainly did me and therefore I started to search for a stammering cure.
