How I Overcame My
Stutter
It is very hard for somebody who has never had a stutter to
understand just how damaging the affect can be on one’s life
and confidence.
This, in many ways, explains why traditional speech
therapists were unable to help me. My name is Steve Hill; I
developed a speech impediment (stutter) when I was a young
child, at the age of four.
By the time I was twenty-two I had had enough of stuttering
and went about finding my own cure, here is my story.
The speech therapists advised me to speak slowly, they wanted
me to take a deep breath before I spoke, they wanted me to
accept the fact that I had a stutter and they also stated that,
unfortunately, there was no known cure for a stutter; therefore
I would have this form of speech impediment for life.
Does the average fluent person speak slowly? No.
Does the average fluent person take a deep breath before they
speak? No.
Was I ever going to accept the fact that I had a stutter?
No.
Was I ever going to accept the fact that I would have the
stutter for the rest of my life? No.
As you can see I was less than impressed with the advice and my
overall experiences at speech therapy.
I can only hope that the service that is offered to people
who have a stutter by traditional therapists has improved since
I attended.
My goal was to achieve fluency, I therefore decided to focus
and study the way the best fluent people were speaking. What
were they doing that I wasn’t?
I also started to read many books about how to gain
self-confidence, how to deal with pressure and anxiety.
I have to say that there was to be no quick fix, progress was
made however progress was slow.
It took me around a year to finally achieve my goal of fluency,
that was thirteen years ago (as at 2008).
I now help other people to overcome their speech impediments
by running one-to-one speech courses.
