Stuttering
Specialist
I have a quick question, how
effective is traditional speech therapy in helping people who
stutter to achieve fluency? Why am I asking this? Well basically
because I am still bitter at the experiences that I had at speech
therapy.
My parents took me to see a
traditional speech therapist when I was just five years of
age.
They were very worried about me, I
had developed a stutter at the age of four and ten months later it
had become more severe. I do not remember anything from the initial
visits to the speech therapists apart from the fact that I did not
want to attend.
The whole idea of attending speech
therapy is to improve one’s fluency and I was also hoping that it
would help me to cure the problem.
I attended speech therapy, on and
off, for thirteen years. THIRTEEN YEARS of speech therapy, did I
improve? Did speech therapy enable me to achieve
fluency?
To my frustration the answer to both
of these questions was a big fat NO. You could hardly call these
speech therapists a stuttering specialist.
To make things even worse, I was
even told by one of these so called speech therapists that you can
not cure a stutter. Thanks for being so positive mate, give me a
gun and I will shoot myself now!
Fortunately I have been bought up to
think in a positive way and to ignore negative people and
influences in life.
This superb upbringing has helped me
on a number of occasions and was to also work with my
speech.
At the age of twenty-two, after
having had a stutter for eighteen years, I managed to achieve
fluency.
As a career I now help other people
who have a stutter, I run The How to Stop Stuttering Centre in
England.
