Therapy for children who stutter
I have a lot of e-mails and telephone calls from parents of children who stutter. It is obviously disturbing for these parents watching
and hearing their loved one’s having to struggle each day. They are interested to see if I can help etc.
In the past I have held speech therapy courses for children as young as seven; looking back this may have been a mistake.
The majority of these young children really did not want to attend the course; this made it very difficult to gain their full attention
and concentration.
I now stress the importance that a parent should only book their child onto a course if their child really wants to attend. The course
can be quite frightening for an adult attending therefore you can imagine how worrying it can be for a child.
I am now thinking that a course is only really suitable for anybody over the age of ten. There are other forms of help that I offer
including an audio book, a seventy minute DVD and the course notes booklet (this is available as an e-book or in paper format).
All of these include full descriptions of each of the techniques which I teach on the course and which I used to overcome my own
stutter.
Even though the stuttering course is on a one-to-one basis this does not mean that the child will be left alone. It is a requirement
that for a parent is present for all children who are under the age of sixteen.
For children who are eager and even looking forward to a course, fluency is readily attainable.
It goes without saying that there is no quick fix, it does take hard work and determination, however with the help of the whole family
the goal of fluency can be achieved.
