The Stammering Course Content
The first two days of the course are used to learn all of
the rules of fluent speech.
The first day is the most important day. this is the
"clients" easy day as I do most of the talking, explaining in detail each of the rules. I will also
explain a little bit about myself and how I achieved fluency. the client will gain on this first day even
though they have received little or no "speech therapy".
On the second day the client becomes more involved, starting to put into
practice what they have learnt from the previous day. The final speech rule is taught on this day.
The final three days are spent practicing, enabling the
rules to become embedded and a natural part of the clients speech.
Some of the areas included in the
course are:
1. Why people stammer
2. Telephone
technique
3. Interview
technique
4. Public speaking
technique
5. The speech rules:
There are numerous speech rules
covering all aspects of speech, I will briefly explain what three of them cover:
a) When I was a
stammerer I found it difficult to pronounce words beginning with certain letters such as b,d,g,k, and v
etc. I would always be substituting words e.g, ‘birmingham’ to ‘west midlands’. These letters plus others are
known as the ‘hard sounding’ letters of the alphabet. I found the ‘soft sounding’ letters (vowels plus the
letter h) normally ok to say. Therefore I was trying to find a technique which would enable me to make hard
sounds soft, I eventually found the answer and one of the speech rules covers this.
b) I hated ‘blocking’
when I was a stammerer. One of the speech rules when applied makes it impossible for the stammerer to
block.
c) For most stammerers their
speech is at its most vulnerable when they are under pressure. I therefore have a speech rule dealing with
this issue.
6. How to become fluent using
the speech rules
7. Understanding the
physcological aspects of speech.
There is nothing in the course
for the client to fear or worry about. If there is an area of the course that they would rather not cover or do
they simply don’t do it.
Each course is unique as every
stammerer is different, this is why courses are run on a one-to-one basis.
Will the course work for
me?
Many people ask me this question
and all I can say to them is that if you study, practice and follow the speech rules it can not fail. There
are two catchphrases for the course, practice makes perfect and to learn from the mistakes you make.
Basically if you stammer it
means you have broken one of the speech rules, you then learn from that mistake, and practice the speech rule which
you have broken.
Once the client has learnt the
rules they automatically know which rule they have broken, therefore it is easily identifiable and the frustration
of not knowing why we stammer has also gone.
I have three types of people
who attend the course:
1. The ‘clients’ that work
extremely hard during and after the course and therefore fluency is quickly attained. These people listen, learn
and trust what is being taught them.
2. The clients that work hard
during the first two or three days but then they seem to get too confident thinking its maybe too easy and there
work level drops. I had a client in 1999 who after three days had considerably improved and was extremely
happy with his progress. However on the fourth day he did not turn up, I was obviously wandering where he was,
it turned out that he had been out drinking heavily and couldn’t get out of bed - not the attitude i
want.
3. The third type of client are
people who are not willing to listen and learn and are not only very negative about the course and their chances of
ever achieving fluency but also about life in general.
I can only help people who want to be helped and who are open minded to new
approaches, the courses I run are nothing like what you would receive via a qualified speech
therapist.Thankfully these types of client are rare.
It is obvious to say that my favourite type of client is number one, if you are this type of person you will
definately succeed.
